Lil Kim Attributes Album Delay To Contract Issues

Get More: Music News

Lil Kim released her most recent album The Naked Truth in 2005, and since then the Queen Bee’s throng of faithful fans have been waiting patiently for another full-length studio project. In a new interview which MTV2’s Sucker Free, which will air during the Notorious B.I.G. tribute segment “Sucker Free Presents: Life After Death – 15 Years Later” on Sunday (March 25) the Brooklyn rapper explains why there’s been such a noticeable delay between album releases.

“The wait and the long time was because when I came from prison in 2006 or 2007 I was just unhappy with my label,” Kim began, during her sit down with Sucker Free. “I wanted to get off and I didn’t get released, I wasn’t dropping—I had to pay them. At the end of the day, that takes time; for two years I fought and fought and fought and finally there was a break.”

“During those two years I did my Hollywood thing, doing reality shows, ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and all that good stuff,” she continued. “But in between me ‘Dancing with the Stars’ I struck up another deal with Trackmasters and it didnt work out. That took another year or two. And contractually, by the courts, I could not record any music—I wasn’t supposed to put any music out.”

Kim proceeded to explain that she was only allowed to release free projects in the meantime. “Technically Black Friday was a mixtape, so I was able to get away with that but they could’ve come after me if I would’ve put out an album,” she says. “This is something that my fans don’t know, but now you know, legally I was not allowed or able to do music. And I’m not gonna say I’m glad that the lawsuit happened with Trackmsters, but it made me more of a business woman.”
