10 Things You Didn't See on TV During the 2016 VH1 Hip Hop Honors
From sexy red carpet styles to stunning tributes to rap royalty Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, Lil' Kim and Salt-N-Pepa, the 2016 VH1 Hip Hop Honors had no shortage of amazing moments. The long-overdue salute to hip hop's leading ladies marked a moment of solidarity in what has been a male-dominated genre. Kim put aside her long-simmering feud with Faith Evans, and Latifah led the ensemble through her 1993 hit "U.N.I.T.Y" in an emotional grand finale.
But what you saw on TV is just part of the story. Read on for some great moments PEOPLE caught while attending the broadcast at New York City's historic Lincoln Center.
4. Lil' Kim made a dramatic entrance.
Lil' Kim staged a delayed arrival, sitting down next to her fellow honorees just as a show producer announced "20 seconds to broadcast" over the PA system. This ensured that the 2016 VH1 Hip Hop Honors started off with deafening screams of excitement. The Queen Bee sure knows how to make an entrance!
7. Lil' Kim delighted the crowd by hiding in the audience.
Lil' Kim vanished from the honorees box for a large portion of the show, but she later reappeared in a surprising place – in the middle of the audience! She was placed in an inconspicuous aisle seat, much to the astonishment and delight of the surrounding crowd, to whom she blew kisses and affectionately clasped hands.
8. Little Royal Reign clapped and grooved along to her mama's performance.
Lil' Kim's adorable 2-year-old Royal Reign made her red carpet debut earlier in the evening wearing a show-stealing gold jacket with a matching hat. She spent the rest of the night behind her mother's seat in the honoree box, and clapped enthusiastically throughout Lil' Kim's tribute performance. Clearly she's a fan!
10. Missy Elliott and Lil' Kim celebrate all night with Hennessy and a bad-ass cake.
Guests of honor Missy Elliott and Lil' Kim arrived to their dinner party well after 1 a.m. They celebrated into the morning hours with all of the essentials – Hennessy and cake! The Queen Bee did the honors of cutting a massive sheet cake, decorated with her VH1 Hip Hop Honors portrait taken by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz.
Lil' Kim performs her hits "Big Momma Thing," "Queen B" and "It's All About the Benjamins" with The Lox.
Queen Latifah, Yo Yo, Monie Love, Da Brat, Ms Jade, MC Lyte, Lady of Rage, Suga T, Rah Digga, Mia X, and Eve perform Queen Latifah's hit "U.N.I.T.Y." to close out Hip Hop Honors.

Lil Kim Tribute at Vh1 Hip Hop Honors
(VH1.com) After Faith Evans’ noteworthy presentation, Lil Mama, Teyana Taylor, French Montana and The Lox took the stage to pay tribute to iconic rapper and fashion icon Lil’ Kim with a medley of her hits. The tribute performance started off with “Crush On You,” performed by Lil Mama. Teyana Taylor took the stage next and slayed her performance of “No Time.” She was then joined on stage by French Montana and The Lox for “All About the Benjamins.”
(VH1.com) Lil’ Kim’s tribute at VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail the Queens was epic. However, something even more epic happened right after it: Puff Daddy surprised Lil’ Kim on stage to show her more love.
“Everything about you, Kim, from your music to your fashion…you brought glamour to hip-hop,” Diddy said.
Lil’ Kim was shocked as all of this was going down. She thought Puff Daddy had a previous engagement, but little did she know that engagement was paying tribute to her.
“With your style…you changed the female MC game…and became one of the biggest international stars in rap history,” Puff Daddy said. “Kim made rap feminine and sexy, stylish and hardcore all at the same time.”
She did indeed. However, Puff Daddy noted that, above all, it’s Lil’ Kim’s fearlessness that makes her the icon she is today.
“It’s her courage,” Puff Daddy said. “She has no fear. Fearless. She’s not afraid to do things differently. She’s a diva at times. She’s high maintenance with me at times. At the end of the day, she demands the ultimate respect, and that’s how you treat a queen.”
(VH1.com) Lil’ Kim may have been one of the honorees at VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail the Queens, but it was her 2-year-old daughter Royal Reign who really stole the show.
During her acceptance speech, Lil’ Kim gave a shout-out to her daughter, who was in the audience. The camera then panned to the tiny child, and she looked so cute that the world imploded.
