Lil' Kim - "Marc Jacobs Wrote Me Every Week in Prison"
Lil' Kim: Rapper, fashion provocateur, jailbird, and, now, artist. With her work hanging in Marc Jacobs' home, no less. The pint-size star, cutting the rug these days on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," says that while she was serving 10 months in jail on perjury charges in 2006, Jacobs' letters helped keep her going.
"He's one of my best friends and was actually a huge supporter when I was in prison," she said in an interview with StyleList.com. "He wrote me every week! "I decided to buy a coloring book - I'm a huge Bratz fan - and I painted the Bratz and made them all wear Marc Jacobs, and sent it to him. He blew it up and framed it, and now it's hanging in his house. So Marc Jacobs is the best."
Lil' Kim and Jacobs are long-time pals. In 2005 Jacobs announced he was designing T-shirts featuring huge photographs of Kim to benefit The Door, a New York non-profit that helps at-risk youths with everything from health care to homework. Kim said at the time that The Door had helped her while she was growing up in Brooklyn.
Kim did Jacobs solid, too, performing a raucous set the after-party following his the showing of his spring 2006 collection (the week before she went to prison). With Lil' Kim already conquering big stages in the worlds of music and dance, can we expect to see the Bratz hanging at MoMA someday? After the jump, photos of the fashion-forward star. Lil Kim
What's your favorite part of Dancing With the Stars? Costumes? Makeup? The actual dancing? My favorite part of Dancing With the Stars is all of the above that you just mentioned! It's like, I'm a girly girl, such a doll - The Doll - so I told them just put me on a stick and turn me around. I'm so used to it. I get to be whatever character I want to be, especially going along with the song.
Are the DWTS costumes more or less comfortable than what you normally sport on stage? The DWTS costumes are actually way more comfortable than the clothing I wear on stage. I am really shocked abou that and excited, too, b/c it makes me happy. I remember doing the Grammys one year, when we won for Lady Marmalade, and we performed. I had an outfit on that was handmade. It was gorgeous, it was like emerald green, with all these stones - they handpicked the stones. And it was so expensive. And I remember we were doing our steps and as one hip went to the left, a bead would go to the right, then a bead would go to the left, and next thing you know, I had a strap hanging. Nobody knew because I kept it going, but one minute longer, and the Grammys would've gotten a whole different show.
Do you get any say in what you wear on the show? I don't get a say in what I wear on the show, but if I try my outfit and I'm not comfortable with it, I can let them know. And they're so good - oh my god, the styling crew, they're just so good. They work with you, they want you to be happy. I love that.
If you could dance with anybody, anywhere, who would it be? If I could dance with anybody, I'd dance with Derek and Mario Lopez at the same time. They're so much fun!
We always love your eye makeup -- can you share any tips? The new color for the season is purple. I'm even wearing it right now! It's like a Barbie doll.
What can you tell us about your accessories? My business pumps are my favorite shoes in my closet right now. They were given to me by Marc Jacobs, himself. He's one of my best friends and was actually a huge supporter when I was in prison - he wrote me every week! I decided to buy a coloring book - I'm a huge Bratz fan - and I painted the Branz and made them wear all Marc Jacobs, and sent it to him. He blew it up and framed it, and now it's hanging in his house. So Marc Jacobs is the best. He gave me his LV set, and gave me shoes to match for my birthday last year.
Regarding the infamous pastie -- were you afraid it was going to come off? The purple pastie, I wore on the MTV awards, and yeah, we were a little nervous about it coming off. But, my stylist at the time was great about making it stay on. I was surprised, because the stickers on my arm were already coming off, and I was like, "Oh my goodness."
With all the traveling you do, you must have great tips on how to look refreshed and avoid jet lag -- can you share your secrets? Recently, I've been traveling with the head pillow. It's so comfortable - it's a MUST for the plane. Bring a little lotion so you can lotion your feet - they'll be swollen. Also, bring a eucalyptic spray -- it opens you up.
